NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina Salutes Melissa Reed

Posted: 03/31/2008

Pro-choice activists praise her leadership and dedication to the choice movement

Raleigh, NC - After four years of dynamic leadership, Melissa Reed will be leaving the position of Executive Director at NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina in April.   Reed will continue to serve an advisory role, and advocate for women’s reproductive freedom in the state.

“We are grateful for Melissa’s strong leadership at NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina,” said Tari Hanneman, Chair of the Board of Directors.  “Melissa’s leadership helped establish NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina as a political force in the state, contributing to substantial gains in the NC House and Senate during the 2006 election. Further, she successfully brought the choice issue to the forefront in the state legislature, helping to educate lawmakers and voters about the importance of honest, realistic sex education and better access to family planning.”

During her tenure as executive director, Reed created the first-ever pro-choice door-to-door canvass operation in North Carolina.  The goal of this program is to build an educated pro-choice voting block across the state.

Reed also led successful efforts to pass pro-choice legislation during the 2006 NC legislative session for the first time in over a decade, correcting medical inaccuracies in the sex education statute.  During the 2007 session, NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina mobilized hundreds of activists around two commonsense bills, one would have provided teens with abstinence-based, comprehensive sex-education in our schools, and the other would have ensured compassionate care for rape victims in emergency rooms.  Finally, Reed established NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina’s role as a political leader in state, playing a crucial role in increasing pro-choice gains in the NC House and Senate during the 2006 election.

NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina is currently seeking applicants for the Executive Director position. For more information, visit http://www.naralnc.org/about/jobs.shtml.
