Gov. McCrory turns his back on NC voters with pledge to sign SB 353
Raleigh, NC.--At a press conference today, Governor McCrory announced that he would sign SB 353. "Governor McCrory is blatantly and unapologetically going back on his campaign promise not to support any restrictions on abortion in our state. He is sending a very public message that he can't be trusted to stick to his word," stated Suzanne Buckley, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina.
"Despite what the Governor may claim, SB 353 will severely restrict women’s access to safe and legal abortion care and jeopardize North Carolina women's health and safety," Buckley said. "This bill is the most egregious attack on women’s reproductive rights and safety that we’ve seen in over 40 years. It will severely limit women’s access to safe and legal abortion care and take access to abortion care coverage away from thousands of North Carolina local government employees,” she added.
"The restrictions on abortion care in SB 353 are exactly what Gov. McCrory promised he wouldn’t sign. North Carolina voters are watching and they will remember this in 2016," Buckley said.
If enacted, this law will deny abortion coverage to women and their families who buy health insurance through North Carolina’s health care exchange even when they use their own money to purchase their plan. The law will also deny city and county employees access to comprehensive reproductive health insurance coverage that most Americans with employer-based insurance currently have.
