Things You Can Do

Here are some major things you can do:

Here are some smaller, less time intensive things you can do:

For more information about these opportunities or to volunteer contact LaFonda Jones-General, Civic Engagement Coordinator, at LaFonda@ProChoiceNC.org.

Join a Volunteer Planning Committee: We have organized 3 different advisory/planning committees for volunteers that are interested in taking a leadership role, helping us develop our strategy, recruit other volunteers, etc. These committees meet once a month and offer volunteers a great opportunity to use their previous organizing skills and learn new ones. Consider joining any of the following committees:
  • Grassroots Organizing Committee: Volunteers on this committee will work with staff to develop an outreach plan to increase NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina’s visibility in the community as well as to recruit, organize, and involve new volunteers.

  • Legislative Committee: This advisory group assists us with legislative strategizing. This includes legal research, monitoring legislative actions, building community support for/against legislation, and some direct lobbying at the legislature.

  • Events Committee: This group will assist NARAL's Executive Director to help plan or host fundraising events. These events can be at your own home or at another location and will involve developing guest lists and assisting with planning the program.

  • Join a Choice Action Team: NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina needs your help to spearhead organizing efforts across the state in our Choice Action Teams (or CATs). These are core groups of volunteers working to advocate for medically accurate sex education and better access to birth control on the local and state level. This is a great opportunity to learn organizing skills while fighting for reproductive freedom in NC.

  • Make a Financial Contribution: If you don’t have the time but you do have some money to spare, please consider making a donation. We are working to establish a sustainable presence here in NC and every little bit helps.

  • Canvassing: At community events where we cannot set up a table, we often like to walk around with petitions and information to let people know that we are active in NC and how they can get involved. We will may canvas door-to-door. Canvassing is important because it reaches many people we would not reach otherwise.

  • Flyering:Whenever we are sponsoring our own event, we will often put up flyers throughout the area or pass them out locally. We will need volunteers to help us with this large task to increase publicity for our events and our organization.

  • Phone Banking:During grassroots issue campaigns, we will often do a phone bank to inform the public about our issue and to gain support. We call community members who are identified as progressive and are usually friendly and receptive to our issue. Phone calls generate large numbers of support that is not possible through mail.

  • Office Work: We also need volunteers to help out at the office periodically with stuffing envelopes, data entry, and similar tasks.

  • Attend a Volunteer Training or Event: As more choice-related bills are introduced in the NC General Assembly, we will need volunteers to write letters-to-the-editor expressing their pro-choice opinion on hot issues. Our staff will assist in you finding correct facts and statistics but your personal relationship to the issue is what is most important.

  • Tabling:Sometimes NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina will get booth or tabling space at community events where we can hand out information on our organization and our issues. Staffing a table involves interacting with the public through telling them about our organization, handing out materials, and then getting them involved in some way, whether it is signing a petition or signing up to volunteer. These are fun events and crucial to recruiting pro-choice supporters throughout the state.
